Welcome to the third issue of the CO2NeuTrAlp newsletter. Project partners currently concentrate on the preparation of the upcoming Kick-off Conference “Future Oriented Mobility: Integrative Concepts for the Alpine Space” that will take place on 29 September 2009 in Kempten, Allgäu. Next to the first results of the project, technological and organisational concepts for sustainable mobility will be presented and discussed. In the current issue of the newsletter, you can learn more about the pilot project in the Allgäu region, dealing with the use of electric vehicles in tourism and local transport and innovative charging infrastructure. We will be happy to welcome you in Kempten among 150 international guests and look forward to a fruitful exchange.

International Conference in Kempten: Future Oriented Mobility

International Conference within the Framework of the Project CO2NeuTrAlp in the Allgäu Region / University of Applied Sciences Kempten, 29th September 2009

International Conference within the Framework of the Project CO2NeuTrAlp in the Allgäu Region / University of Applied Sciences Kempten, 29th September 2009 The future energy supply is facing great challenges. On the one hand climate change is steadily proceeding, on the other hand raw materials are becoming scarce - and much more expensive in the long term. Nowadays 98% of road transport in the EU depends on fossil fuels. Within the EU Alpine Space Project CO2NeuTrAlp - CO2-Neutral Transport for the Alpine Space (www.co2neutralp.eu) it shall be demonstrated, that environmentally friendly mobility by means of renewable resources from the region is feasible without endangering the environment.

The Project Partner for Evaluation: Helmholtz Zentrum Munich

Helmholtz provides scientific support to the PIPs and evaluates the environmental situation in the correspondent regions.
Research in the Institute of Ecological Chemistry of Helmholtz Zentrum MĂĽnchen focuses on the occurrence, behaviour, and effects of chemicals in the outside environment and indoors, and with remediation techniques for and avoidance of environmental pollution. One of the main interests is the development of methodologies for the characterisation of sustainable mobility in contrast to conventional forms of traffic.

The Allgäu Region on the way to sustainable mobility

Alongside the north rim of the Alpes - between the Lake of Constance and the Neuschwanstein Castle - the Allgäu offers everything from glittering waters over rolling foothills to the majesty of the mountains. Years of established culture wherever you look, full of the vitality of rural customs and the traditional way of life.
Therefore our overall goal in the project is to reduce the daily commuting to Ljubljana by private vehicles and to increase the use of public transport by making this type of transport more user friendly as well as by raising public awareness, starting with the young population. The sustainable mobility of the region will be tackled within the CO2NeuTrAlp project activities and through exchange of experience with project partners coming from regions with far higher level of sustainable mobility and use of renewable energy sources.

Pilot Project in the »Allgäu«

Projectpartner ALLNETZ, in cooperation with Leadpartner B.A.U.M., will implement and assess concrete pilot actions such as promoting the use of electric vehicles (cars and trucks as workforce vehicles, buses, scooters, segways and pedelecs) and innovative charging infrastructure (plug roaming) in the region.
CO2NeuTrAlp partners in the Allgäu region use and compare electric and biofuel technologies. Public and private bodies deploy multiple vehicles and check the user acceptance and the effects for the region.
Using latest technologies the Allgäu runs electric cars, trucks, bikes etc. in various sharing systems. With an innovative concept the partners won a technology competition. For their E-Tour project they will receive funding from the German government.
Vehicles powered by bioethanol or pure plant oil will be tested in municipal fleets and on farms. Partners investigate the viability of the technologies, the chances to locally produce the fuels and environmental and economic effects.
